Strachan Scores a Second-Place at the Indian Summer Trophy Races
Mosport International Raceway hosted the annual Indian Summer Trophy Races September 15-16. Large grids provided big excitement and close competition with the tremendously fast unlimited sports cars setting the fastest laps of the weekend. Burlington’s Tor Kruger set fast time with a blistering 1:21.6 qualifying lap. Malcolm Strachan posted 1:23.3 to claim second fastest trials ahead the viper of Nick Majors.
Race one saw Krueger’s 650 horsepower Trans-Am Camaro car hotly chased by Strachan’s 500 hp Mobil-1 Corvette. Strachan clung tenaciously to Krueger until a broken exhaust pipe melted panels in the cockpit allowing hot exhaust gases to fill the corvettes interior. Strachan struggled to the finish in second, despite suffering from the inhalation of exhaust fumes.
Recovered for race two, Strachan again chased Krueger’s Trans Am car, catching up to the Pepsi Camaro in the corners, only to see it pull 15 car lengths on the straight a ways. Strachan was able to battle back through traffic to catch up to Krueger, challenging for the lead on the final lap. The margin at the finish was a mere eight-tenths of a second.
For race three, much the same occurred, with Strachan only able to challenge in the corners due to the power differential. However, Strachan lost all hope of catching Krueger when he was caught behind slow cars in a caution flag area, where no passing is allowed, for two of the final laps.
The last event of the season for Strachan is at Mont Tremblant, Quebec this weekend. This annual Fall Classic brings out the best of the Porsches, Ferraris, Corvettes and Vipers in the country. Strachan will defend his 2006 victory at the ultra-fast Circuit Mont Tremblant.
